Spring 2016 Workshops

And, there are a few workshops outside of the studio I want to make sure you know about.

This Spring I am bringing back a couple of workshops that I haven't taught in two years: Origami Travel Notebook and Stitched Photo Collage.

Origami Travel Notebook

Origami Travel Notebook is a structure that I devised to hold signatures that are made up of a traditional Japanese folding technique that contains many useful pockets. They can stand on their own as pamphlets or portfolios or they can be sewn into a larger structure as signatures. There are also blank pages incorporated into the structure. The pockets and the blank pages together make for a great structure for traveling - jotting down notes, writing, sketching and a place to stash tickets, maps and other findings.

Stitched Photo Collage

The Stitched Photo Collage was a student favorite for many years but I gave it a little break. A few of my newer students requested that I teach it again. It is a fun way to incorporate fabric, thread, book pages, photographs and other ephemera into pieces that can then be part of a book or a wall piece.

Boro Bags

A new workshop is Boro Bags that is proving to be very popular (I ran a "beta" session in January and students loved it!). Both dates are already full but I may add more so get on the waitlist to be the first to hear if I add more dates. In this class I share what I know about Boro textiles (I'm still learning more all the time!) and then students use a length of cloth as a sampler to learn the stitching and mending techniques seen in Boro textiles. At the end of the class the lengths of cloth are made into bags! Students have their choice of one of two traditional Japanese bags that are simple but ingenious in their design. The bags can be used as book bags, project bags, or for shopping or a very fancy gift wrapping.

Carousel Books by Jennie Hinchcliff

Last, but definitely not least, is my guest instructor extraordinaire Jennie Hinchcliff. She will be teaching Creative Carousel Books: Layers and Windows. Jennie is so much fun and such a great teacher. If you are in the area you don't want to miss this one!

I also have two teaching/traveling workshops scheduled:

Mountain Maid Workshops is a new program in the Grass Valley/Nevada City, California area. I will be teaching Boro Bags there on April 23rd. This will be a nice opportunity to take this class if you are outside of the Wishi Washi Studio area.

Boro Bag

And, I'm thrilled to be teaching the Boro Sampler Book at Squam Art Retreats in June. They are located in New Hampshire...on a lake! Students pick their choice of two one-day classes from a stellar line-up of instructors. I'm very much looking forward to being in New England again.

Boro Books

If you are no where near any of these venues remember that I have classes online at Creativebug

I hope to make something with you soon!

10 March 2014

Origami Travel Notebook

Travel and I have a funny relationship. I love going places, seeing things, being inspired and out of my normal element and I especially enjoy the "head clearing" aspect of getting away for a bit. But, on the flip side I love home. And, sometimes find it hard to leave. There will be a bit more travel for me in the next two years than usual and I am really looking forward to that.

So, it was nice that I had some quite seasoned travelers in my workshop this past Saturday as I led them along in making their own Origami Travel Notebooks! We had a lively morning talking about travels while working on our books.

this is the folded structure with pockets - oh look how nicely the class templates and my Creativebug card fit so nicely into the pocket!

The Origami Travel Notebook is a structure that I devised. The signatures, or sections, are made up of the Origami Pamphlet structure (which I did not make up but rather it is, I am told, a Japanese folding technique originally used to make wallets). One of my students taught me this ingenious little structure, and I immediately loved it, but also saw the structure acting as a signature, or sections, in a paper case book. The subtitle for this workshops is: With Too Many Pockets to Mention because each section holds 6 pockets and depending on how many sections you add...well...you can do the math.

way too many pockets to mention...

It is a fabulous structure for storing little bits of ephemera picked up during travels, making notes, storing a small map, and drawing and writing (since there is also a multi-paged section tucked into the origami sections).

For the covers we used both Cave Papers and Hark Handmade Papers. These papers are gorgeous! and tough! Being handmade papers they possess beautiful deckled edges that can sometimes be a challenge to incorporate into a paper case cover since they are not always square. So I made the suggestion to cut off the deckle, save it, and work it back into the composition of the cover.

this student made beautiful strata with her deckled edges - she will add stitching later
After the books were assembled students spent the rest of their time adorning their books with pieces of maps from my collection.

See more examples from my blogpost last year. And, if you want to learn to make the folded origami structure used as sections in this book you can find my online class at Creativebug under a slightly different name: Six Pocket Keepsake Book.

Happy Travels!

Busy Bees in Wishi Washi Studio

Apparently, now I hibernate and so does my blog.

I last posted in late November while my solo show at Cabrillo Gallery was still up - then, evidently, some much needed downtime was in order - and down I went...

But, I'm awake now and so is my studio - busy with students making and creating.  Here is a Wishi Washi Studio recap of the last couple of months.

In February I visited the Codex Book Fair in Richmond, California and stocked up on Cave Paper and Hark!Handmade Paper for my workshops...gorgeous, right?

First workshop up in March was Crossed-Structure which is one of my favorite bindings to teach and make.  We used some of the beautifully rich Cave Papers made out of flax:

Next up was Buttonhole Stitch Binding.  I enjoyed photographing all the working hands in the studio that day:

And, these are a couple of finished Buttonhole Bindings:

We started out April with the Origami Travel Notebook: a fun structure that has 18 pockets inside, lots of pages to write and draw on and more of that luscious Cave Paper and Hark!Handmade Paper for covers:

And, just this last Saturday we made Exploding Picture Boxes - a Victorian paper craft structure that has 28 planes/pages for images and pictures.  My students came up with a myriad of ideas and innovations for this structure:

More great workshops coming up later this Spring and Summer.  Check out the schedules here.

And, if you aren't in the Wishi Washi Studio area come take a class with me in North Carolina this June - information here.

Also...don't forget about Creativebug...workshops 24/7...anywhere...anytime...
